Facts about Maryland and Annapolis

  • Established in 1632, Maryland was one of the original 13 colonies of the United States. It was named for Henrietta Maria, Queen Consort of King Charles I of England.
  • Annapolis is the capital of the state of Maryland, and the county seat of Anne Arundel County.
  • Annapolis was the capital of the United States from November 26, 1783, until June 3, 1784.
  • Maryland joined the Union as the seventh state on April 28, 1788.
  • The Maryland State House in Annapolis is the oldest state house in continuous legislative use in the United States. Its dome is the largest wooden dome built without nails in the United States.
  • General George Washington resigned his commission from the Continental Army at the Annapolis State House on December 23, 1783.
  • Annapolis is the home of the United States Naval Academy.
  • The Annapolis neighborhood of Eastport has jokingly declared itself to be an independent micronation, the Maritime Republic of Eastport.
